Authorities have apprehended three more of the ten inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail earlier this month, after over a week on the run. The Louisiana State Police announced the re-arrests on the platform X.
One of the men was taken into custody in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, by local law enforcement, while two others were apprehended in Walker County, Texas, by officials there. State police indicated that two remaining inmates are still at large. No further details regarding Monday’s arrests were immediately available.
The ten inmates staged a daring escape on May 16 from a New Orleans correctional facility. Investigations revealed that the men exploited a faulty cell door, squeezed through a hole located behind a toilet, scaled a barbed-wire fence, and fled under the cover of darkness.
The inmates’ absence was not discovered until a morning headcount, several hours after their escape. Graffiti with the message “To Easy LoL,” accompanied by an arrow pointing towards the opening, was found on a wall. City and state officials have since acknowledged multiple security deficiencies within the jail.
Louisiana authorities identified the latest recaptured inmates as Lenton Vanburen, Leo Tate, and Jermaine Donald. Previously, escapees Dkenan Dennis, Corey Boyd, Gary C. Price, Kendell Myles, and Robert Moody were taken into custody. Many of the inmates were originally being held in the New Orleans jail while awaiting sentencing or trial for a range of alleged violent crimes, including murder.
In the aftermath of the escape, a jail maintenance worker was arrested and accused of intentionally turning off the water supply to the toilet in the inmates’ cell, an action authorities believe facilitated their escape. The worker claimed he was threatened by one of the inmates to carry out the act. Additionally, four other individuals have been arrested for allegedly providing assistance to the escaped inmates while they were at large.
