An 18-year-old star basketball player, who recently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, has died after being struck in a jet ski hit-and-run incident on Grapevine Lake in Texas. Authorities have launched an urgent manhunt and released a photo of the suspected driver.
The victim, Ava Moore, was kayaking on the lake in Grapevine on Sunday evening when she was allegedly struck by two women riding a jet ski, according to police reports.
Eyewitness Lisa Scrabeck recounted the immediate aftermath to WFAA, stating, “Once she came out of the water, I had them lay her down and started helping at that point. Started life-saving measures to help the young girl.”
Moore, a standout basketball player and a 2024 graduate of Fort Worth Timber Creek High School, was immediately transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
According to authorities, the woman operating the jet ski fled the scene in a car with a man, striking another vehicle as they departed. The second woman on the jet ski remained at the location and was interviewed by police.
Grapevine Police Department released a photograph of the suspected jet ski driver to aid in their efforts to locate and apprehend her.
In a statement released by her family, they expressed their profound grief, saying, “We are grieving the loss of our daughter at this time…. Our prayers are also with the young ladies involved, along with their families.” The investigation into the fatal hit-and-run is ongoing.
