A 57-year-old woman from Homestead, Florida, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing her daughter-in-law multiple times in front of her grandchildren. The incident reportedly followed a dispute that began after the two women consumed alcoholic beverages at a local Chili’s restaurant.
Incident Details
According to the Homestead Police Department, officers responded to a call at a residence on Southwest Fourth Avenue around 3:42 p.m. on Wednesday. Upon arrival, they found the victim lying in a pool of blood on the living room floor, leaning against a cot bed. The victim was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center in critical condition.
The victim’s children were present during the incident. One of them reportedly told officers, “Grandma started to kill mommy with the knife,” and indicated that the weapon was hidden under a bed in the room.
Background and Arrest
The victim informed detectives that she and her mother-in-law had been drinking at a Chili’s Grill & Bar earlier that day. After returning home, an argument ensued between them. The victim recalled that Ward charged at her, and during the confrontation, Ward allegedly stabbed her multiple times.
Ward provided a recorded statement to detectives, claiming that the victim had punched her several times in the face and that she acted in self-defense. However, police noted that Ward did not have any visible injuries.
Ward was arrested on an attempted murder charge and is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. As of Thursday morning, her bond had not been set.
Child Welfare Involvement
Following the incident, the victim’s children were placed under the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
This case underscores the potential dangers of domestic disputes escalating into violence, especially when children are present. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
