A long-unsolved murder case has taken a dramatic turn after authorities arrested a man who allegedly killed his wife nearly 20 years ago and then vanished — only to reemerge in Costa Rica with the family’s teenage nanny. According to law enforcement officials, the case was cracked with the help of the very woman he once fled with.
The case traces back to 2006, when Ana Katalina McLean, a beloved mother and teacher, was found murdered in her South Carolina home. For years, her husband, John McLean, was a person of interest, but no solid evidence tied him directly to the crime—until now.
Investigators revealed that shortly after his wife’s murder, McLean left the country with the family’s 17-year-old nanny. The two began a romantic relationship and built a life in Costa Rica under false identities, successfully evading authorities for years.
But the relationship eventually soured. In a surprising twist, the now-adult former nanny came forward, providing investigators with key testimony and evidence that helped solidify the case against McLean. Her cooperation was pivotal in bringing charges against him, according to officials familiar with the investigation.
Authorities say McLean has been extradited to the United States and is currently facing charges of first-degree murder. Prosecutors described the case as a chilling example of betrayal and manipulation, made all the more tragic by the long delay in justice.
“This is about closure, truth, and finally giving Ana’s family the answers they’ve waited almost 20 years for,” said a spokesperson for the local sheriff’s office. “This arrest was made possible by someone who once trusted the suspect, and her courage in coming forward cannot be overstated.”
The case is expected to proceed to trial later this year.
