PEOPLE has contacted New South Wales Police and New South Wales Ambulance for further comment.
The Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that the 10-year-old boy allegedly had two stab wounds; the 13-year-old girl had three stab wounds and the 16-year-old girl, who is a paraplegic, had one stab wound and other cuts.
“This is probably completely unexpected,” Moore said, per The Sydney Morning Herald. “This is the first time police have responded to this house for any type of domestic situation.”
The detective also added that the mother had been acting “erratically” before the attack.
“We believe the father and the children were all in their rooms, and potentially all asleep when the mother has carried out this act,” she said, according to ABC.
“It’s tragic,” Moore continued, per The Sydney Morning Herald. “It’s certainly not something that my staff or I want to wake up to on a Monday morning. We take our responsibility to domestic violence in the Hills very, very seriously, and the first question I had this morning was, ‘Have we dealt with this family before?’ What have we done? And as sad as it is, we haven’t dealt with this family before, and I only wish that we had [have].”
“Maybe we could have reached out and helped this family sooner had we known there were problems in the household,” she continued.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the family was described as “quiet” by a neighbor.
“The father was standing there, he was quite calm. I saw him run back inside to grab a bag and then came out and jumped in the ambulance with his family. He’s the one I see the most,” they said.
“They’re generally really nice people,” another neighbor added. “They come over for Christmas and give us chocolates, and we give them treats for their three kids,” adding that the family usually kept to themselves.
Police said the woman has been refused bail and is set to appear via a bedside hearing in Parramatta Local Court on April 1, according to the release.
