The Pentagon has confirmed that the U.S. Department of Defense has officially accepted a Boeing 747 aircraft gifted by Qatar, intended for refitting as Air Force One. This decision has sparked significant controversy among lawmakers, raising concerns about security, potential quid pro quo arrangements, and the constitutionality of accepting such a gift.
Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated to Fox News, “The Secretary of Defense has accepted a Boeing 747 from Qatar in accordance with all federal rules and regulations. The Department of Defense will work to ensure proper security measures and functional-mission requirements are considered for an aircraft used to transport the President of the United States. For additional information, we refer you to the United States Air Force.”
The acceptance of the Qatari jet has drawn sharp criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a Trump ally, expressed concerns about “significant espionage and surveillance problems,” while Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) labeled the move “farcically corrupt” and “blatantly unconstitutional,” questioning the acceptance of a “400 million flying palace from the royal family of Qatar.” Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) also voiced security concerns, stating, “Qatar is not, in my opinion, a great ally. I mean, they support Hamas. So what I’m worried about is the safety of the president.”
President Trump, when questioned about the acceptance, responded, “They’re giving the United States Air Force a jet, okay, and it’s a great thing.” He also engaged in a verbal altercation with the reporter, dismissing them as “a terrible reporter.” Trump further boasted about securing $5.1 trillion in investments during his recent Middle East trip.
In a prior social media post, Trump addressed the criticism, stating, “So the fact that the Defense Department is getting a GIFT, FREE OF CHARGE, of a 747 aircraft to replace the 40 year old Air Force One, temporarily, in a very public and transparent transaction, so bothers the Crooked Democrats that they insist we pay, TOP DOLLAR, for the plane. Anybody can do that! The Dems are World Class Losers!!! MAGA.”
The acceptance of the Qatari jet comes amidst ongoing issues with the previously contracted Air Force One replacement. In 2018, Trump awarded Boeing a $3.9 billion fixed-price agreement for two new jets, intended for delivery in 2024. However, the project is now approximately five years behind schedule and $2.5 billion over budget.
The controversy surrounding the Qatari gift highlights the complex political and security considerations involved in presidential transportation, raising questions about transparency and potential foreign influence. The Pentagon’s assurances of adhering to federal regulations and implementing proper security measures are likely to face increased scrutiny as the refitting process progresses.
