A mass shooting in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park on Monday night resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to nine others, according to authorities.
The gunfire erupted around 10:27 p.m., Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel announced during a news conference. Commissioner Bethel stated that the deceased victims were an adult man and an adult woman. Among the injured are three teenagers, ages 15, 16, and 17.
“Multiple rounds were fired,” Commissioner Bethel said, noting the presence of “different groups of young people” in the area following a car meetup. He added that no weapons had been recovered from the scene as of the time of the news conference. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
When questioned about whether a single gunman was responsible for the shooting, Commissioner Bethel responded, “We don’t know yet.” He elaborated, “We’ll be able to determine if it was one weapon or multiple weapons, but it’s pretty rapid fire.”
Video footage from the location depicted a significant police presence, with officers continuing their investigation late into the night. Earlier in the day, Fairmount Park had been filled with families and community members enjoying Memorial Day cookouts, as reported by CNN affiliate WPVI.
CNN has reached out to the Philadelphia Police Department, Philadelphia Fire Department, Emergency Services, and the city authorities for further information regarding the incident.
